The Coffee Table with Tristen Glaab

While walking around at Artisanal LA this past October, we came across a rustic and cozy display (see photo at end of post) of custom furniture. A few seconds into talking with the owners of the company, we could tell they were … Continue reading

My passion is producing electronic pop music, and for the past six months I have been producing my first record. I plan on releasing the record early next year, but in the mean time, I decided to have some fun! I’ve been in the studio producing my own music mash-ups; I take two songs, one classic and one current, and combine them to make one original tune! For example, my first release featured Color Me Badd’s ‘I Wanna Sex You Up’ and Taylor Swift’s ’22′. Stay tuned for the next one which is Miley Cyrus’ ‘Wrecking Ball’ and Meatloaf’s ‘I Would Do Anything For Love’ on SoundCloud and Oct. 16th on Youtube.

Favorite Drink

Hibiscus Iced Tea from Starbucks.

It’s the Little Things

  • Sunshine (I’m a vitamin D addict)
  • Dancing alone in my undies to pop music (Spice Girls….I’m a nineties bitch! I love it!)
  • The ice that comes in little baby sized pellets. I call it chewy ice. GIMME.

My Coffee Table

coffeetable 2

My coffee table is a trunk that I found at a Vintage Automobile swap meet in Long Beach for 20 bucks. Major steal!

Some of the items on the table: A vintage postcard of Lake of the Isles in Minneapolis, MN. If you look hard enough- you can see my heart sunbathing on the shoreline. No really, I left it there. Hashtag HOME. A sample of my sister’s artwork (I Think About You- card). She makes clever letterpress cards that you can buy at The Paper Source and on her website. Tickets to Purity Ring at the Fonda…a souvenir from a great show… plus we got to celebrate Corin’s birthday with him backstage! Life is good! I love to read and am currently going through an English historical fiction stage, so books about the Lancasters, Yorks, and Tudors are all up my alley. This is probably what inspired my mash-up of Lorde’s Royals… images of Anne Boleyn and Queen Elizabeth are swimming around in my head!

The Coffee Table with Jessica Murnane

Today’s Coffee Table guest is based (and plant-based) in Chicago and understands the importance of the little things in life: handwritten notes, unique gifts, and the moments and activities that make up one’s day. Give a big welcome to:

Currently Brewing

I just wrapped up a certification in plant-based nutrition and launched a new website/food initiative called One Part Plant. The website is a healthy foodie/ lifestyle site with recipes, tips, and practical advice. The site also features partnering hotels and restaurants that offer plant-based dishes on their menus (some for the very first time). There’s even a popular steakhouse on board! After avoiding a major surgery by changing my diet to a plant-based one, I am a huge advocate of using food as medicine. I am so passionate about this project and helping others get healthy, I get giggly just thinking about it.

Favorite Drink

I have always wished I liked coffee. Seriously. I even attempted to fake-like-it in college. But I just don’t. I make a green juice every morning – which is my version of coffee. And if I am not at home to make my own, I just discovered Suja. Their juices are so damn good.

 It’s the Little Things

My Coffee Table
I found my coffee table at a thrift store in Chicago. I love the scalloped edges and detail. After I bought it, I took off the top (the top is a separate piece – like a tray) and flipped it over to clean. There is a very fancy and pretty piece of metal (the size of the paper in a fortune cookie) that says “Made in Italy”. I would love to know the story of how it made its way to Chicago.
Some of these items I really have no idea where they came from. The spoon, I know I got at a flea market in Paris. The book was a gift to my husband I picked up at a museum in Madrid. But I was looking at the bird nest, crab necklace, and black apple and thought “where the hell did those come from?”. No idea. They are just little oddities I have picked up through the years that always move with me.

Words of Wisdom

My Dad’s classic answer to everything, “Live in the now”.

“Rejoice in other people’s successes because there is plenty for everyone”. – Louise Hay

I have been practicing this for the past 6 months. I used to get so competitive with other people’s accomplishments. But this new thought process has been a real game changer for me. Frees up so much space in the my brain to do more.

The Coffee Table with Tom Sykes

Joining us this week at The Coffee Table is social media man for Liquorice, Tom Sykes  from Cape Town, South Africa.

Currently Brewing

After taking a bit of a hiatus on the blog front, I have re-entered the wild world of animated GIFs and have just fired up TOMOHAWK.

Otherwise, I spend the majority of my hours curating a bunch of really cool Social Media accounts for Liquorice. Some of my favorites include: Lipton Ice Tea, Pepsi SA, Richelieu Brandy and Gordon’s Gin.

Favorite Drink

I really can’t find anything better than the classic cappuccino. When ordering it at a restaurant or coffee shop I make sure to always pronounce it, ‘capp-uh-chi-nio.’ It always gets a good reaction and I always get a cup filled to the top. Also, there had better be Bean There Burundian in that cup son! I’m not super particular about my beans, but those folks at Bean There have found a magical bean in Burundi. Delish.

It’s the Little Things

  • Kevin Spacey films
  • Everything Neil Armstrong did during his life
  • Winning indoor Cricket matches

My Coffee Table

The coffee table is from a second hand store in Stellenbosch, SA. It’s an absolutely solid piece of timber that’s been with me through three different apartments. If it could talk it would tell of a hundred different meals and two dozen friends that have sat around it and allowed me to call this house a home.

I’m quite a simple man. Everything in my apartment is either useful, beautiful, or in a cupboard. On my coffee table I keep a copy of the Carhartt Brand Book, which was when I started investigating the history and depth of iconic brands before they needed gimmicks to stand out. Also, a copy of my first ever Wallpaper* Magazine (Nov 2010), which was when I started looking at design seriously. My SUPER sunnies are either on the end of my nose or on my coffee table. I use the same box my SUPER sunglasses came in to store odds and ends, but it’s mostly filled with coins now.

The Coffee Table with Sunnie Brook Jones

Welcome to this week’s Coffee Table Q&A with Silverlake, CA based hair and makeup artist Sunnie Brook Jones! Take a seat, grab a drink, and get cozy.

I’m launching an online beauty shop of thoughtfully curated beauty kits and products inspired by the looks featured on my beauty blog and youtube channel.

Favorite Drink

A dry non-fat cappuccino (my friends and I call it an Al-paccino). I also love espresso poured over ice cream…two of my favorite things in my tummy, oh and chocolate.

It’s the Little Things

  • People
  • the ocean
  • Heart to hearts
  • Music

    My Coffee Table

The book Food, fashion, friends by Fleur Wood is full of pretty eye candy and creative ideas. My cup is handmade from an artist I met while in Israel last year. The rainbow of color against the grainy rocky texture is so pleasurable for me and the shape feels like I’m being kissed! I like to have my cup and bits near to me while I’m sitting. The table: This table made me smile because of the word cut outs (kinda reminded me of Rob Ryan’s art) and my favorite color is fuschia. It’s also very practical and easy to move, which is convenient since I like to do spontaneous furniture re-arranging! Plus it can go next to my bed for those early mornings when I need my coffee before opening my eyes.

    Words of Wisdom

Never stop hoping and dreaming. Be open handed with everything you have from your heart to your home. Always love and forgive. Embrace each day one at a time and give your best.

The Coffee Table with Marissa Maharaj

Welcome to The Coffee Table interview series! Have a seat, grab a drink, and meet Los Angeles based musician & lifestyle/wedding photographer:

Marissa Maharaj

Currently Brewing

I’m currently working on a second album and I’m really excited for the challenge and growth that round two will bring! Last year I released my first EP, Letters, which was something I’d been working on for a while and finally worked up the courage to orchestrate. I had the privilege of teaming up with a few companies like ModCloth and Element, who used some of my songs for their videos and promos; I was blown away by the kind support of the incredible artist community in Seattle (where I was living at the time).

Favorite Drink

I’m all about the brewed coffee. Having lived in Seattle for over four years, you’d think I’d be a bit picky about my coffee, but given a blind taste test I’d probably choose diner coffee every time. No cream, no sugar, just give me a jug and I’ll be on my way.

It’s the Little Things

  • Snail mail. Which I never get, except from Bank of America, and those guys hardly ever write in cursive.
  • Taco Trucks. You can find them everywhere in LA. They’re pretty much like Santa on wheels, if Santa hung out in the Vons parking lot after 9pm and mastered the art of the perfect mulita.
  • When I do laundry and all my clothes don’t come out pink. (Happens more than I care to say.)

My Coffee Table

Succulents. We love succulents in this house! This does not mean that we can keep them alive. Do not be mislead.

Coffee Table

Magazines. My roomie Emma works with Kinfolk on occasion, and I love pouring over the pages as soon as we get a new issue.

Instax & Old Photos. Some instax from my trip to Paris this summer and old photos I found at the Long Beach Flea Market.

The table: My roommate Emma and I were out brunching when we ran into Casa Victoria, a tiny little furniture shop where we found the leather couch of our dreams. The owner, Robert, graciously offered to move it to our apartment, and when he arrived he had a coffee table for us as well! (He probably did some guess work and figured we were newbies who still ate on the floor.) We didn’t end up buying an actual dining table for another few months, so that coffee table hosted meals, office work, and actually one smallish dinner party. Needless to say, we wrote Casa Victoria a sizeable review on Yelp.

Words of Wisdom

My mother has more wisdom than anyone I’ve ever met- everything she
says could go on a tea bag. One of my favorites (besides “it can be fixed with a snack”) is:

two hours at a time

I can get overwhelmed in the midst of running my photography business, traveling, freelancing, and dreaming up new projects, and my mothers wise words always come back to me: “Two hours at a time- take life two hours at a time. Don’t focus on what you have to do this year, this week, or even for the rest of the day-just focus on the next two hours”. I don’t know if that would fit on a tea bag, but someone should certainly try.

Coming to a “coffee table” near you…

A new interview series on YFB will be premiering this Thursday Oct. 18!

The Coffee Table is a Q&A with an eclectic mix of interesting and talented human beings. We love getting to know people and what their metaphorical cup of coffee is–what wakes them up, excites them, and keeps them going.

Coffee tables reveal a lot about someone: what’s on the table, how organized or disorganized it might be, all the way down to the story of the table itself. Curiosity runs in our veins and is what drove us to create this series. Sharing your unique personality and coffee table details provide wonderful insight and inspiration. It’s coffee and conversation with cool people around the nation.

We hope you’ll check it out,

Kathryn & Amanda

Hello World!

Kathryn Wahl, a free spirit from the east coast, lives in Los Angeles and spends most of her time putting herself in other people’s shoes in film and TV. Amanda Kretzmann is a California native, bookworm, and lover of arts & crafts.
The two met in 2011 while working at Smashbox Studios and formed a special bond that leaves many asking if they’re not just best friends, but sisters. (Which suits them just fine since they both have brothers.) Kathryn and Amanda share a blog, Your Favorite Blend, featuring daily musings and an interview series with creatives as they sip coffee and soak in the art of living life.
