The Coffee Table with Mary Costa

You guys…this girl. I’m actually taking forever just to write this intro because I’m clicking on every photo and side bar page of this adventurous photographer and believe this is one of those times when a photo (her photos) will speak more than words. Say hello to lover of dunkin donuts, dogs, vintage style, travel, bright colors, cupcakes, balloons and more:

After recently going freelance, I’m making big plans to grow my wedding and portrait business in 2013! With weddings booked on both coasts, I’m going to be doing a lot of traveling. I also became a guest contributor for the cooking blog Garlic My Soul. My article, Sweet & Caffeinated, features a different coffee/dessert establishment every month. On top of everything, I’m constantly dreaming up new photo shoot ideas.  It’s always such a treat to collaborate with other creative minds on styled wedding and fashion shoots!

Favorite Drink

I would be betraying my New England roots if I said anything besides a hot cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee. I brew it at home since LA is void of Dunkin Donuts, but it’s just not the same! If we’re talking locally, however, Coffee Commissary on Fairfax has one of the best vanilla lattes I’ve ever tried.

It’s the Little Things

  • Listening to albums on vinyl
  • California sunset hikes with friends
  • My dad’s breakfast sandwiches – best ever, I tell you!

My Coffee Table

CoffeeTable6My boyfriend carefully removed labels from wine bottles so I could decoupage this IKEA coffee table. I’m instantly reminded of memories with loved ones when I look at this collage – bottles shared on pizza nights with friends, special getaways to Paso Robles…my coffee table is a scrapbook all its own!

CoffeeTable3

There’s quite a bit of stuff on this small table! I always drink my morning coffee in a diner mug – I have an ever-growing collection from my travels.

I discovered the joy of stroopwaffles after studying abroad in the Netherlands…these tasty snacks are a must-have in my apartment at all times! Also seen here – a book by one of my favorite authors, Fuji Instax prints, and antique binoculars.

I’ve got a lot of things brewing right now! Between personal styling gigs for my Hollywood clients, keeping up with my blog, teaching classes at School of Style, and working as a style expert via brands partnerships … it’s hard to pick just one to dish on.

The most recent brew I have going is a partnership with Rimmel London. For this project I am styling eight unique looks that correspond with custom lip colors I created by blending their Stay Glossy lip glosses. It’s been really fun to be able to incorporate beauty and fashion into one big project. I have a couple of super cool projects coming up but for now they must remain top secret. Cue the maniacal laughter …

Favorite Drink

I am a sucker for hot mint green tea but also love gynostemma tea, which is said to be the healthiest tea in the world. It’s caffeine free but still manages to give me all the energy I need.

It’s the Little Things

  • Playing with my friend Miguel’s dogs, Lotus and Picasso
  • Watching Dexter and Breaking Bad even though it gives me bad dreams
  • Shopping. Sure it’s my job but I still count it as one of those little things

My Coffee Table

IMG_0991

I have a bunch of little random tables around my house that act as my coffee table. They usually have books, magazines, a weird toy, and a candle on them. On my current “coffee table” I have fashion books from the fashion heroes that inspire me – Brad Goreski, Stacy London, Amanda Brooks, and Sasha Charnin Morris. I also have a View Master that was gifted to me at a press preview. Now if only I could find my old She-Ra and Fraggle Rock View Master slides …

The table is from Home Goods aka my favorite place to find home décor. I am a sucker for a bargain and treasure hunt – so it’s perfect. The table is also portable so I can move it by my bed or into my dressing room to set jewelry and accessories on it; I’m all about versatility.

Words of Wisdom

Hard work pays off!! If you want something bad enough, go get it, and don’t let anyone stop you.

The Coffee Table with Marissa A. Ross

On this fine day in December, I’d like to introduce a Los Angeles lady whose talents are as long as her hair! Ladies and Gentleman, personal assistant to hilarious actress Mindy Kaling, writer, actor, amateur wine taster, and music connoisseur:

We just wrapped production and are about to start editing the last four episodes of my web series, Tangents & The Times. I’m not one to usually be too boastful about my projects, but I genuinely believe it’s some of the best work I’ve ever done and I am beyond excited about it. Other than that, I’m just working on scripts and spending too much time on my too many Tumblrs.

Favorite Drink

It would have to be iced coffee with a touch of almond milk. Drinking good iced coffee makes me feel a thousand times smarter and more productive than anything else outside of the black market.

It’s the Little Things

Outside the obvious, like my loved ones and laughing until I cry, I would have to say:

  • The smell of wet grass
  • Palm Springs’ Alexander Homes
  • Cheese samples at Whole Foods

My Coffee Table

Coffee Table

My coffee table is always covered in hardbacks of my pool photography & my boyfriend’s graphic design books, stacks of artsy surf magazines, random editions of Sunset and Travel & Leisure, notebooks, and random scripts of mine. My boyfriend and I made homemade coasters; it’s neat because they’ve sort of documented our artistic inspirations over the years and a so-cute-it’s-almost-lame way to get crafty with him. The ones pictured are mine though. His are all of skaters and Native American art and I mean, who cares this is about meeeee!

coasters and magazines

My boyfriend and I bought our coffee table when we first moved in together, and it’s always felt a little out of place. But whatever, it’s covered in weed dust ninety percent of the time anyway and has a thousand water marks from the many sleepovers we’ve hosted with bands coming through Echo Park. You’d think with all our adorable coasters we wouldn’t have a problem, but people get to drinking and don’t think about coasters. Yet. One day we’ll grow up and everyone will be super into coasters.

Words of Wisdom

My personal mantra is, “Know the destination and life will present the path.”               …Most people think that it’s too new agey, so my back up is usually something along the lines of, “No one is going to believe in you if you don’t believe in yourself.”

Both have the same general sentiment–believe in yourself and believe in what you do.

Oh, one more for the road: “Don’t take yourself seriously, take what you do seriously.”

The Coffee Table with Erin Tavin

When it comes to gift giving, nothing is better than a one-of-a-kind gem! That’s where Tavin Boutique in Echo Park, Los Angeles comes in. When you walk in the door you’ll find vintage as well as contemporary clothing, accessories, and home decor. Earlier this year, I interviewed the store’s owner ( also a buyer, stylist, and costumer) for My Top 5 on Smashbox Studios’ Yello blog. I realized…if this lovely lady’s coffee table is even half as cool as her store, we’re in for a treat. Take your coffee break with this week’s guest:

What’s Brewing

THE HOLIDAYS AT TAVIN!!! We are filling the shop with lots of beautiful gifts and holiday clothing to delight everyone. I’m an east coaster and I grew up with ALOT of holiday influences: Central Park, Rockefeller Center, the store windows on Fifth Ave, etc. We have a big holiday party at the shop that’s fun and festive with lots of sparkle, joy and drink!

Favorite Drink

Stumptown coffee preferably at a fave outdoor cafe in Portland or a good hot chocolate with a little fresh whipped cream on a chilly day. I love cozy stuff; walking around with my drink while I shop for the store makes it all much cozier and sweet.

It’s The Little Things
  • reading by a fireplace
  • the wilds of Big Sur ( love Eselon hot baths there )
  • flea markets in Paris- oh what a lovely and heavenly day that is for me!
  • camping with my husband in amazing places!

                                                       My Coffee Table

Coffee Tableon the table: a To-Do list which is HUGE ! I pull out the clip board when the list gets too long. A Francesa Woodman book from her show, handmade houses book, and great spa and hot springs book.
coffee table

Some of my favorite novels: the Dud Avocado and Revenge of the Lawn— race to read the Dud Avocado its a major favorite of mine! I also have some rice hot cereal with berries, bananas, and maple syrup and a big cup of tea called “commune” from LA MILL.

Words of Wisdom

Follow that dream! There’s always a million and one reasons why NOT to follow it and usually it involves money… but whats money when it comes down to happiness and fulfillment right? TIME MOVES FAST SO FOLLOW THAT DREAM NOW!!! NOW NOW NOW!!!

The Coffee Table with Sharzad Kiadeh

Hi guys! Black Friday and Cyber Monday were crazy days– to help you ease out of the “sale high” We’re offering : read one interview, get an extra one free! Here’s an extra coffee table interview for you to enjoy and check in this Thursday for the regular scheduled post! We’re so thankful for our readers and contributors; never is there a shortage of creativity and inspiration!!! As I wipe the mascara off my cheek from this sentimental intro… please bat your lashes for founder and blogger of LuxLyfe:

I try to have new projects constantly brewing. I love connecting with new people and brands and I continue to be excited about my on-going partnerships with Room77 and Burke Williams. In a perfect world I would have a webseries show where I travel the world and try exotic beauty treatments in other countries. Any producers out there listening?!

Favorite Drink

I’m actually not a coffee drinker. My drink of choice is sparkling water with lemon (totally boring, I know). If we’re talking booze (which is way more fun!) I love single varietal Pinot’s from the Russian River Valley and I’m currently obsessed with the Kari-Kari cocktail from Michaels in Santa Monica. (Kari-Kari is Japanese whiskey, Serrano chilis and cilantro)

It’s the Little Things

  • Being surrounded by smart, creative, driven, fun, happy, and healthy people. (ie my hubby, family, and friends!)
  • Living in California makes me VERY happy; always has, always will.
  • Doing what I love for a living. I feel extremely fortunate that I have the opportunity to go after my dreams every day.

My Coffee Table

My hubs had the coffee table custom made; he has way better taste in home decor than I do! We like to keep things simple and clean in our apartment, so there are only two things on our table: a beautiful globe, which was a gift from my in-laws, and a Romeo and Julietta limited edition Cigar humidor.

Words of Wisdom

I think being fearless and persistent are two things that have always worked for me. I have never been afraid to go after what I want and I always encourage others to chase after their dreams! Treat everyone with respect and smile!

The Coffee Table with Jackie Shuman

Oh hi there! Happy Thursday! This week we bring you a Los Angeles born, Brooklyn-living lady who is sure to have you skipping to the beat of a new tune. Drumroll please for music supervisor:

I’m still reeling from all the incredible shows I saw during CMJ in October – Mac DeMarco, Slam Donahue, Team Spirit and Foxygen blew my mind…but I also came across some emerging artists I hadn’t heard before.  I get such a thrill out of incorporating undiscovered bands into my work and introducing people to their new favorite songs.

My next project is coordinating music for a short film from the very talented New York photographer Julian Ungano.  Julian has spent the past few years creating incredible video art in the fashion world for everyone from Narcisco Rodriguez to Esquire Magazine and I cannot wait to work on his first narrative film.

                                                        Favorite Drink

There’s a Blue Bottle Coffee a few blocks from my apartment in Williamsburg and I basically give them all my money.  Their “New Orleans” cold-brewed iced coffee is made with chicory root, simple syrup and whole milk…and it’s nothing short of incredible.  It supposedly takes an entire day for them to make, and I believe it.

                                                     It’s the Little Things

  • Clean white sheets, fresh from the dryer. I seriously value my sleep.
  •  My best friend, Stephanie. I only get to see her a few times a year since I moved to the East coast and every time we talk it lights up my life.
  • Those first few times you hear a song and realize it’s going to be your newest obsession, and then the following few weeks when it’s all you listen to.

My Coffee Table

Coffee Table old trunk

My “coffee table” is an old trunk I found on the street in my neighborhood one day last year.  I saw it sitting outside a house, tried lifting it and decided it was coming home with me.

billboard magazine

Sitting on the table right now: my glasses, a collar necklace I just bought from Jewelmint that I’ve been wearing with every outfit regardless of whether or not it makes sense to do so.  There’s also an old issue of Billboard, a gorgeous typewritten letter my friend Hannah sent me, today’s “to-do” list, some paint swatches for a wall I’m decorating, and perhaps my proudest purchase of the summer: a $1 CD of Fleetwood Mac covers by everyone from The Cranberries to Elton John.

 Words of Wisdom
