My passion is producing electronic pop music, and for the past six months I have been producing my first record. I plan on releasing the record early next year, but in the mean time, I decided to have some fun! I’ve been in the studio producing my own music mash-ups; I take two songs, one classic and one current, and combine them to make one original tune! For example, my first release featured Color Me Badd’s ‘I Wanna Sex You Up’ and Taylor Swift’s ’22′. Stay tuned for the next one which is Miley Cyrus’ ‘Wrecking Ball’ and Meatloaf’s ‘I Would Do Anything For Love’ on SoundCloud and Oct. 16th on Youtube.

Favorite Drink

Hibiscus Iced Tea from Starbucks.

It’s the Little Things

  • Sunshine (I’m a vitamin D addict)
  • Dancing alone in my undies to pop music (Spice Girls….I’m a nineties bitch! I love it!)
  • The ice that comes in little baby sized pellets. I call it chewy ice. GIMME.

My Coffee Table

coffeetable 2

My coffee table is a trunk that I found at a Vintage Automobile swap meet in Long Beach for 20 bucks. Major steal!

Some of the items on the table: A vintage postcard of Lake of the Isles in Minneapolis, MN. If you look hard enough- you can see my heart sunbathing on the shoreline. No really, I left it there. Hashtag HOME. A sample of my sister’s artwork (I Think About You- card). She makes clever letterpress cards that you can buy at The Paper Source and on her website. Tickets to Purity Ring at the Fonda…a souvenir from a great show… plus we got to celebrate Corin’s birthday with him backstage! Life is good! I love to read and am currently going through an English historical fiction stage, so books about the Lancasters, Yorks, and Tudors are all up my alley. This is probably what inspired my mash-up of Lorde’s Royals… images of Anne Boleyn and Queen Elizabeth are swimming around in my head!

The Coffee Table with Jessi Williams

I need an extra boost of inspiration and some quick reading time on how people live their creative lives. That’s why I’m thinking of getting an extra shot of The Coffee Table in my weekly mug of a blog. Enough thinking…let’s get doing!
Originally from Batesville, IN and currently living in Los Angeles, CA, this lady has a lot on her plate including music and motherhood…all while keeping a great sense of humor:

Projects with my band, The Lonely Wild. Making music with these dudes makes me happier than anything in the world. We have an album coming out this spring along with a music video and tour. That keeps me pretty busy. There are always new songs and I play several instruments in the band, so I have to keep polished on all of them. Recently I’ve been pretty determined to add banjo to that list. We’ll be playing The Echo February 8th – ahem #plug. We’d love for any and many to join us for the show!

Favorite Drink

I can totally get down with a plain ole cup a’joe. I’m talking driving-down-Hwy 50-middle-of-nowhere-diner-coffee, with tons of cream and sugar of course.

It’s the Little Things

  • When something I say makes someone laugh, particularly my daughter or my mom. Just laughter in general. What could be better?
  • I love cat noses and how they do that thing where they just keep bumping their nose up against you.
  • Anytime I put ‘Decade’ on the turntable I am feelin’ fine.

My Coffee Table

First I have to admit: This is a clean version of my coffee table. I thought I’d spare you the usual “last night’s dinner” plates, whatever project my daughter, Lily, has strewn about (usually something sticky), or receipts, purchase orders and other remnants of whatever job I’m finishing up (I moonlight as a music video/commercial Production Manager).

The coffee table itself is special to me. When I was born, both of my parents worked at Rom-Weber Furniture in Indiana. My dad built this table the year I was born and it lived in his garage for a long time. When I moved to Nashville we refinished it together. I believe I was 23, which is the same age he was when he built it. What you see here are the things that live on the table on a more permanent basis:

jessi williams

My computer, my guitar capo (I have separation anxiety if it’s not in my sight at all times), some guitar picks (can also be found in my purse, car, couch, pocket of every pair of pants I own, and various laundromat dryers around town), my songbook, my favorite brand of pen (Staples Revu), coasters (I respect wood) and a glass of water in a ball jar (all my glasses are mason ball jars.) Oh, there are also some pieces of pine needles and a pine cone courtesy of Lily. She’s always collecting rocks and sticks and leaving them around the house. She may have been a squirrel in a past life.

Words of Wisdom

There are so many Tom Robbins quotes that I love. It’s hard to pick just one. Just go read his books! Anytime I start taking myself too seriously and I need a slap in the face, I know I can depend on one of his classics.

“There are two kinds of people in this world: Those who believe there are two kinds of people in this world and those who are smart enough to know better.”

At one point I was really terrified of airplanes. Then I realized that if I was going to let fear keep me from experiencing things in life, then I might as well go down with that plane. There really aren’t enough hours in the day to accomplish all the things I want to do. I try my hardest to use my time to the fullest and not let fear hold me back. Or as Tom would say: “To live fully, one must be free, but to be free one must give up security. Therefore, to live one must be ready to die. How’s that for a paradox?”

I recently graduated college, so after 4 1/2 years of that I’m ready to stop channeling so much energy into schoolwork and get to be creative again. I’m very thankful for my education, but I love creating too much! The plan as of now is continue on with my band Branches and tour a few weeks here and there, and continue to perform all over with them! I am also going to start work on my solo project quite soon as well! I’ve got so many record ideas that I can’t hold in any longer! I’d love to do my solo stuff, then a collaboration CD with each song being a different person I’ve worked with over the years, and hopefully an album eventually where I re-arrange old hymns. I really dig old hymns, and recently Sufjan went way back to the 16th century and re-imagined some beautiful hymns for his new christmas album, and they are incredibly beautiful and haunting, and it made me want to do it even more. Other than that I’ve worked recently with a few close friends on some little projects such as Cigarette Barbiesworking with Shawn Morones, and I also am involved on and off in performing with Robert DelongSo rad that I get to work with my good friends!

Favorite Drink

I’m completely enamored with Intellegentsia Iced Latte’s. I know people give them a hard time because of the trendy factor, but honestly, the coffee is just the best coffee I’ve ever had, and i’ve had the privilige to go to a lot of coffee shops all over the country! I really dig the iced chai tea latte from starbucks though as well!

It’s the Little Things

  • Good food (generally accompanied by good conversation, company, and a tasty beer)
  • Beach bonfires
  • Great coffee shops

My Coffee Table

I’m not exactly sure where this coffee table came from. It’s a pretty neat chest and I actually didn’t care for it too much at first, but I’ve really grown to dig it! It was my mom’s and she is letting me use it for now I suppose!

I generally have these things out somewhere most of the time. Some of the time my coffee table, and sometimes at my desk or wherever I feel creative. Most of the time, I’m tinkling around with acoustic guitar or banjo, but it has been the banjo as of late. Trying to nail the proper technique of it down!

The paint brushes are sort of representative of the fact that I love crafts! I like to dabble in art and make little installations (if you could call them that, haha) in my little house. I am by no means a professional artist, but i really do have a special place in my heart for painting and drawing.

I LOVE candles. Probably too much. I just love warm ambience, especially because I travel so much, it’s nice to have a quiet warm place to come back to. I saw these wine bottle candles at my friend Andrew’s house in San Luis Obispo when we were on tour, and I loved it! So I made a few of my own.

I always have my mac computer with me. I wasn’t too fond of apple products before I actually got an apple product. I don’t know what I’d do without it now! I write (music and poetry mostly) on it, record on it, and love staying up to date with things via the interweb.

Words of Wisdom

Well, this is so tough to narrow it down! I really love these three so much, and seem to always come back to these.

“There are people who go after your humanity, sister. They tell you that the light in your heart is a weakness. Don’t believe it. It’s an old tactic of cruel people to kill kindness in the name of virtue. There’s nothing wrong with love.”-Doubt

“In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me?”-Psalm 56: 4

And finally, I firmly believe in the equality of men and women. I don’t hate men at all! And I don’t like to be associated with that type of feminism, but unfortunately I still see bits and pieces of inequality in the world between the sexes and it really hits me hard. Especially being a woman in the music industry!

“Woman’s God – given sphere is as wide as the earth’s circumference, as high as the firmament and as deep as the sea. Every foot of this globe has been deeded to her as much as to man.-Lee Anne Starr

Oh hi there! Happy Thursday! This week we bring you a Los Angeles born, Brooklyn-living lady who is sure to have you skipping to the beat of a new tune. Drumroll please for music supervisor:

I’m still reeling from all the incredible shows I saw during CMJ in October – Mac DeMarco, Slam Donahue, Team Spirit and Foxygen blew my mind…but I also came across some emerging artists I hadn’t heard before.  I get such a thrill out of incorporating undiscovered bands into my work and introducing people to their new favorite songs.

My next project is coordinating music for a short film from the very talented New York photographer Julian Ungano.  Julian has spent the past few years creating incredible video art in the fashion world for everyone from Narcisco Rodriguez to Esquire Magazine and I cannot wait to work on his first narrative film.

                                                        Favorite Drink

There’s a Blue Bottle Coffee a few blocks from my apartment in Williamsburg and I basically give them all my money.  Their “New Orleans” cold-brewed iced coffee is made with chicory root, simple syrup and whole milk…and it’s nothing short of incredible.  It supposedly takes an entire day for them to make, and I believe it.

                                                     It’s the Little Things

  • Clean white sheets, fresh from the dryer. I seriously value my sleep.
  •  My best friend, Stephanie. I only get to see her a few times a year since I moved to the East coast and every time we talk it lights up my life.
  • Those first few times you hear a song and realize it’s going to be your newest obsession, and then the following few weeks when it’s all you listen to.

My Coffee Table

Coffee Table old trunk

My “coffee table” is an old trunk I found on the street in my neighborhood one day last year.  I saw it sitting outside a house, tried lifting it and decided it was coming home with me.

billboard magazine

Sitting on the table right now: my glasses, a collar necklace I just bought from Jewelmint that I’ve been wearing with every outfit regardless of whether or not it makes sense to do so.  There’s also an old issue of Billboard, a gorgeous typewritten letter my friend Hannah sent me, today’s “to-do” list, some paint swatches for a wall I’m decorating, and perhaps my proudest purchase of the summer: a $1 CD of Fleetwood Mac covers by everyone from The Cranberries to Elton John.

 Words of Wisdom

I’m currently working on a second album and I’m really excited for the challenge and growth that round two will bring! Last year I released my first EP, Letters, which was something I’d been working on for a while and finally worked up the courage to orchestrate. I had the privilege of teaming up with a few companies like ModCloth and Element, who used some of my songs for their videos and promos; I was blown away by the kind support of the incredible artist community in Seattle (where I was living at the time).

Favorite Drink

I’m all about the brewed coffee. Having lived in Seattle for over four years, you’d think I’d be a bit picky about my coffee, but given a blind taste test I’d probably choose diner coffee every time. No cream, no sugar, just give me a jug and I’ll be on my way.

It’s the Little Things

  • Snail mail. Which I never get, except from Bank of America, and those guys hardly ever write in cursive.
  • Taco Trucks. You can find them everywhere in LA. They’re pretty much like Santa on wheels, if Santa hung out in the Vons parking lot after 9pm and mastered the art of the perfect mulita.
  • When I do laundry and all my clothes don’t come out pink. (Happens more than I care to say.)

My Coffee Table

Succulents. We love succulents in this house! This does not mean that we can keep them alive. Do not be mislead.

Coffee Table

Magazines. My roomie Emma works with Kinfolk on occasion, and I love pouring over the pages as soon as we get a new issue.

Instax & Old Photos. Some instax from my trip to Paris this summer and old photos I found at the Long Beach Flea Market.

The table: My roommate Emma and I were out brunching when we ran into Casa Victoria, a tiny little furniture shop where we found the leather couch of our dreams. The owner, Robert, graciously offered to move it to our apartment, and when he arrived he had a coffee table for us as well! (He probably did some guess work and figured we were newbies who still ate on the floor.) We didn’t end up buying an actual dining table for another few months, so that coffee table hosted meals, office work, and actually one smallish dinner party. Needless to say, we wrote Casa Victoria a sizeable review on Yelp.

Words of Wisdom

My mother has more wisdom than anyone I’ve ever met- everything she
says could go on a tea bag. One of my favorites (besides “it can be fixed with a snack”) is:

two hours at a time

I can get overwhelmed in the midst of running my photography business, traveling, freelancing, and dreaming up new projects, and my mothers wise words always come back to me: “Two hours at a time- take life two hours at a time. Don’t focus on what you have to do this year, this week, or even for the rest of the day-just focus on the next two hours”. I don’t know if that would fit on a tea bag, but someone should certainly try.

National Coffee Day

…was yesterday. Take a second and think of how far those beans have come, from the farmers who laboriously grow the beans, the roasters who skillfully roast them, to the baristas who artfully brew the beans into the yummy beverage we all enjoy. THE BEST PART IS: There’s nothing stopping us from extending this holiday into a lifelong celebration. A few ways to celebrate:
